Summer School SAPPK 2018 is a special two-weeks program initiated by Architecture Program, School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia. This program explores new approaches and methods in the design process, harnessing the advancement of digital tools applied to and assist in architectural and built environment design and planning. The aim of this program is to introduce and embrace a new way of iterative tooling mechanism, enabling the coherent interplay of material, technology, and architectural form – the Digital Tectonics. During the Summer School, it focused on computational design methods as a new paradigm on architecture and built environment design. These topics were discussed through lecture series and workshops. The lecture series addressed the following topics: 1) Physical Prototyping and Digital Fabrication, 2) Urban Modleing and Simulation, 3) Bioclimatic Design and Evidence-based Analysis. Meanwhile, the workshops were split into 2 main topics including 1) Digital Tooling & Algorithm-based Form Finding Optimizaiton, and 2) Environmental Modeling and Simulation.

The challenge during participating the Summer School, especially to me, was some activities related to 3D modeling by using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. It was because my background is very limited to the architectural paradigm. Honestly, I was not the only one who gets some difficulties in this topics, but I was trying harder to follow in order to create simulation by parametric design so that the simulation could be completed.
I learned very much by participating this summer school. It allowed me to get more interaction with new tools and software, people from architecture background, and speakers from various universities all over the worlds. The event is also very helpful as well as inspires me to get some research ideas related to what I am working on right now and surely very correlated with the research topics in CDSR-SHERA.
During the summer school, all participants have created a chat group via WhatsApp massenger to discuss the progress of projects and assignment of the training class. Now the group has become a space to discuss more about the future works and potential collaborative projects between the alumni.
