This training was conducted in three days: 6, 13 and 20 December (two hours per session), to deliver hands-on experience about how to develop projects and instrument in REDCap application, for CCR-ARI scholars (incl. their research team), CCR-ARI management team, and field doctors. It was expected that this training would be attended by 10 persons from CCR-ARI scholars in emergency department, radiology department, and paediatric department of RSHS, CCR-ARI Management Team, and field doctors. In fact, on the first day, the course was attended by 19 participants (2 from radiology department, 1 from emergency department, 3 field doctors, 2 from CCR-ARI Management Team, and 11 from paediatic department). It was a weekly training with Ginanjar Syuhada as the main speaker, and Fikrianti Surachman as the facilitator.
The main purpose of this activity is to facilitate scholars and other CCR-ARI members in leveraging REDCap as either a research data collection tool, or as a database management tool. The materials for this course were mainly derived from Data & Database Management Training conducted by Brian Montague and Rowena Crow on 31 Oct - 1 November 2018. At the end of the course, we asked the participants whether the course was helpful, and the majority of them agreed that the course has helped them to develop an easier and a more efficient tool to collect reserach data. They hope that the course can be conducted regularly so they can have a more thorough discussion regarding their project. Unfortunately, due to some technical issues and unexpected number of participants, especially on Day 1, we could not provide them a good internet connection and all participants needed to use their own laptop. These issues made the first-day course did not work well. Therefore, the next day, we asked the computer lab person-in-charge to provide us an open internet connection, so everyone could access it without a login. On the day 2 and 3, we had a less number of participants compared to the first day's. Therefore it was less packed and less busy, and everyone can work on the computer with a good internet connection too, so the course went more effeftively and efficiently.
- Limited number of computers with no internet connection. So, we asked the participants to use their laptop and mobile internet data. - On the first day, we also asked some participants to work on group as not everyone brought their laptop to the course. It was a bit hard to handle, as not everyone had the same level of IT skills, but we managed to do it by approaching each group personally. - REDCap is a brand new topic for the participants, and not everyone is familiar with IT terms, so we explain the materials in a plain language whenever it's possible.
It would be great if we could limit the course participation, especially if the participants are not familiar with online data collection tools or have a limited IT skills. It is also crucial to make sure that everything is well-prepared, especially the number of computers available and internet connection. The lab computer room is too large to conduct such interactive training, so if we can use a smaller room with less participants, e. g. SHERA meeting room, it will be helpful to have a more efficient training process.
We will ask how far the participants have applied the course in their research within three months. Because some participants are new to REDCap, some consultation sessions regarding this might be needed in the future.
