The course took place 3 days (8 am to 6 pm) at Kyriad Hotel, Banda Aceh. The organizing committee included staffs from CCR-ARI UNPAD & UNSYIAH, staffs from the department of Clinical Epidemiology UNPAD, and staffs from the Faculty of Medicine UNSYIAH. A total of 45 persons participated in the course, in which 5 scholars were from lead and universities (UNRAM, UNPATTI, UNLAM). Six workshop Instructors and facilitators were from UNPAD (three of them are UNPAD scholars), included lecturers from Clinical Epidemiology, Public Health and Internal Medicine with extensive experience in research design particularly RCT, Cohort, Case control, and cross sectional study. Following evaluation from the previous Clinical Epidemiology training in 2018. This year we started the training with discussion on Data type and quality followed by research design. This is to make participants understand, although as clinicians we are exposed to data everywhere in the hospital, these data were not intended for research therefore there is always the issue of quality, validity and reliability. Afterwards the materials continued with research design. During the afternoon session more detailed discussions were made on RCT and cohort. Through group activity participants stimulated the concept of research design using cards and playing mats developed by the department of Clinical Epidemiology. On the morning session of the second day, the group activity was on case control and cohort. Afterwards in the afternoon, participants stimulated how to develop a well designed research questions and they were given the task of developing their own research interest into a feasible research question. Lastly on the third day particpants presented their topics.
Through the group sessions, participants were more able to go into details their questions on research design. It was very interesting as the enthusiam of participants continued until the third day, even then vice dean were present and active in the sessions. On the third day during research question presentation, participants realized the potential of interdepartment collaboration on research. Almost all groups eventually started to formulate bigger research questions that require involvment of multiple departments from the university as well as the hospital. Some participants were asked to give their testimonials on the training program. One explained how even as a specialist consultant his understanding on the concepts of reseach was still minimum and through this training clinical research seemed to be more possible to do. Another participant from lombok shared that most of the time when guiding her students in their thesis she would go directly to technical issues, while the basic concepts were missed. Through this event, she was able to refine the design of her own research topic and got input on how to supervise students in their thesis. Topics on interuniversity collaboration was discussed using SHERA as a potential platform.
Among the challenges were the different backgrounds of participants on their research capacity. Some were PhD graduates and some had very basic understanding on research. At the beginning the facilitators discussed how to approach this matter so that all participants would benefit from the event. Eventually, majority of participants were active, even though they already obtain PhD, they became triggers for further discussion on the materials.
Having the lead university come and conduct training for affiliate university is a very good approach to increase research capacity on the long run. Collaboration projects such as SHERA CCR ARI has inspired faculty staffs to use the opportunity and develop other research ideas that can be conducted with different departments, hospital, as well as university. Small group discussion is an effective method to deliver materials.
A) conduct similar courses more often in other sites b) make series of courses from basic to advance clinical epidemiology, including use of statistical analyses c) keep network for potential interdisciplinary research among participants from various fields"

Average: 16. 3/20 points Median: 18/20 points Range: 9-20 points"
There is an overall increase in comprehension regarding the topic.
