There were 4 scholars from University of Indonesia and 3 scholars from University of Florida, partner university in the United States (U. S. ) invited to deliver lessons and to mentor all participants in revising the proposals which are supposed to be submitted to any national/research fundings. The experts were professors and lectures whose expertise indicated by its authorship's h-index of at least 5, and have experience in getting funded/awarded for their research proposals. Initially CCR SMART CITY targeted 65 participants from 6 universities joining this activity: UI (20), UNPAD (10), UNDIP (10), UNUD (10), UNSRI (10), & UTS (5). However there are some changes: PGRI (a HEI non-member of CCR SMART CITY) asked to join in the short course. Therefore, we accomodate 5 scholars as participants. That makes a total of 68 participants recorded as official beneficiaries (means they have registrated through designated form and validated by each university). However there are 73 participants attended the workshop. The additional participants are scholars from UI. Participants consist of 52 faculty members and 16 doctoral students. Their field of studies are varied from: medical and biomedical science, nursing, accounting, economic and business, social and political science, science and mathematics, computer science, geological engineering, environmental science, environmental engineering, biology, civil engineering, and nutrition science. They brought the draft of research proposal that they intended to submit to an international or national fundings. On the first day, the 3 UF scholars presenting about following substances: 1) Introduction to Research Design and Methods, 2) Developing Research Design and Methods, and 3) Research Protocol Development. On the second day, 5 mentors from UF and UI presented some study cases: their own research which ever awarded by national and international donor institution. Then 1 mentor from UI presented a review of his own book about making proposals successfully funded. At the end of the day, 1 mentor from UI who is also a reviewer in KEMENRISTEKDIKTI presented a substance about selection factor in competitive research fundings. On the third day, participants are given time to revise their respective draft of proposal, the on the fourth (last) day, the participants were divided into seven (7) groups of mentors, according to the suitability of their research theme and submission target (national/international). Along with the short course that is intended for junior facuty members and graduate students on 5 - 8 Mar 2018, we also held a focus group discussion on research collaboration between Indonesian and American institution. This activity is to facilitate targeted researchers (mostly experts and heads of research clusters from UI) who are focused in joint research. They are given networking opportunities to develop international research cooperation under the program “Penelitian Kerjasama Luar Negeri (PKLN)” by Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic Indonesia (KEMENRISTEKDIKTI) with American institution, especially through presentation and communicating with UF scholars who visit as mentors of Research Design & Methods Short Course. The key highlight in this activity is that not only CCR SMART CITY discuss and trying on having a joint research in the field of science, technology, and innovation. In this meeting event we also invited UI scholars who is also a focal point researchers in social studies as well activist for women or the gender issue, Chusnul Mar’iyah Ph. D to share her research “A Gender Analysis of Urban Political Conflict: Housing Redevelopment from Traditional Village to Modern Apartment in Jakarta”. This enhanced the outlook on CCR SMART CITY research, that other than the four themes and 10 topics stipulated, along with the observation, intervention, policy, and any other components, the decision taken on implementing and embodying the concept of SMART CITY will affecting the human social life related according to their gender.
By the time this report submitted, there are have been 20 persons receive certificate for their submission of revised proposals in this short course.
(1) Providing substances that accommodates broad field of study of participants, especially because there are more people from medical science interested in CCR SMART CITY's program. Although there are topics about healthcare in CCR SMART CITY, some of participants' research are not really corresponding with SMART CITY's theme and topic. (2) Because most of the proposals here is written in Indonesian, there is a big gap between number of mentees for UF and UI mentors.
(1) We think a discussion on research collaboration between Indonesian and American institution along with the short course is a good initiation and we need to make this event again. with better preparation. (2) Will find a way to push the mentor in providing pretest and posttest. (3) We received some inputs regarding programs and approach such as: sharing presentation from junipr faculty members and graduate student who have been managed to get research grant, tips and trick on how to defend research proposal in front of the board of reviewer, smart concept on sustainable waste utilization, special time to discuss between participants, more time for ice breaking, games, or intermezzo for participants to get to know each other and build networking, more intensive mentoring. (4) For the next short course: we are considering to hold outside of Depok City (e. g. Jakarta or in affiliates' location) therefore we can accomodate more participants from affiliates as well as get more connected to them. The materials and substances will be more focused or have specialisation, for example: with variation of workshop about applied technology, field study to laboratorium, etc.
We will follow up on how participants has progressed on submitting their research proposal to international/national fundings.
